Press Release from Government of Canada about Halloween Safety for Canadians!
October 26, 2015
For immediate release
For immediate release
OTTAWA – Halloween can be a fun and exciting time for children. Following a few safety tips will help to ensure that it is a safe experience for the whole family.
Tips for parents – food allergies or sensitivities
- Consider giving out treats that do not contain ingredients like peanuts, tree nuts, milk and egg. These ingredients can cause severe reactions in individuals who have allergies or sensitivities.
- If your child has food allergies, read labels carefully and avoid candies that do not have an ingredient list, or that have a “may contain” statement that lists ingredients to which he/she is allergic.
- If your child has been prescribed an epinephrine auto-injector because of a food allergy, make sure they have it available whenever they are eating.
Trick or Treating
- Give each child a flashlight to carry to make them more visible to motorists and others.
- Tell your children to stay in well-lit areas and only visit homes that have their outside lights turned on. Make sure they know not to go inside homes or cars.
- Tell your children not to eat any treats until you have checked them first.
- Throw out treats that are not commercially wrapped, or are found in torn, damaged or loose packages.
- Wash your hands before opening and eating candy treats.
- Remove any choking hazards like gum, peanuts, hard candies or small toys from the loot bags of young children. Do not let children younger than three years of age play with toys with small parts.
- Wash fresh fruit thoroughly and cut it open before eating it. Inspect for holes, including small punctures and cuts. If there are any, do not eat the fruit. When in doubt, throw it out!
Costume safety
Coming up with a creative disguise doesn't mean that safety should be forgotten.
- Make sure that costumes are loose enough to be worn over warm clothing, but not so baggy or long that children can trip over their costumes.
- Pick brightly coloured costumes that can be clearly seen by motorists. Add reflective tape to the costume to increase visibility.
- Use make-up or face paint instead of masks - improperly fitted masks can interfere with your child's vision or breathing. Before using face paint or make-up, do a patch test to see if your child is sensitive or allergic to something in the cosmetic. Even products labelled as “hypoallergenic” can still cause allergic reactions.
- If you choose to use a mask, make sure it is one that allows the child to see and breathe easily.
- Look for costumes and accessories such as beards, wigs, wings and tails that are labelled flame-resistant. Flowing skirts and capes, baggy sleeves and over-sized costumes can all be hazards around candles or flames. Nylon or heavyweight polyester costumes are best. Remember, flame-resistant does not mean fire-proof.

Change information received for Website building workshop!
Hi
Everyone,
There
has been a bit of change regarding ASL Interpreting for the Website building
Workshop at MAWA (611 Main Street) on Oct 21st.
On
advice, MAWA will supply ASL Interpreting on request only
instead of offering it freely, since at this point it looks like that no Deaf
Artists are interested in taking the workshop.
If
you intend to go or you know of any Deaf person who wants to take this
workshop, please contact me at wildtypography@gmail.com
and I will arrange for ASL Interpreting.
Please
contact me if you have any questions.
Best,
Alice

Free-Barrier Manitoba announced about the Election that is related to Canadians with Disabilities Act!
We are writing to share the great news on the federal election
front: three of the five major parties running in the federal election have now
committed to introducing a Canadians with Disabilities Act if they form the
next government.
The Liberal Party of Canada made this commitment earlier today: http://www.liberal.ca/realchange/a-new-health-accord/
On September 29, 2015, the NDP made the commitment to:
·
Introduce a Canadians
with Disabilities Act which will seek to eliminate systemic barriers that
Canadians with disabilities face;
·
Develop a National
Action Plan to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with
Disabilities;
·
Work with provinces,
territories, indigenous communities and disability organizations to review and
coordinate income supports; and
·
Defend the rights of
Canadians with disabilities by reinstating the Court Challenges Program and
fixing the CPP disability appeals process.
The Green Party promised to support passage of the Canadians
with Disabilities Act earlier in the campaign.
The only two major parties in this federal election that have
not yet pledged to support passage of a Canadians with Disabilities Act are the
Conservative Party of Canada and the Bloc Quebecois.
This remarkable progress has been made possible by the
exceptional work of Barrier-Free
Canada. While Barrier-Free
Manitoba endorsed their efforts, we cannot take any of the credit. The many
involved with Barrier-Free Canada have worked tirelessly to get these
commitments. We extend our earnest thanks and hearty congratulations.
This wonderful progress demonstrates yet again the major
difference disability communities can make when we work together.
With only 2 weeks left before voting day, a lot of work still
remains. We encourage you to get involved. And the best place to start is using
the handy dandy Barrier-Free Canada 2015 Federal Election Action Kit.
Check it out.
That gets us to the ‘more great news coming’ section of this
message. Barrier-Free Manitoba has been busy working on two major plans to
advance disability rights in Manitoba in 2016 and beyond. We look forward to
sharing information on these two developments soon after the federal election.

Patrick Falconer
