Hello!

OTTAWA -
Deaf and hard-of-hearing Canadians fear their needs as voting citizens might be
lost in the shuffle in the coming election campaign as the federal parties
squabble over the formats and hosts of the leaders debates.

Emergency Preparedness Information Tip #3-#5!

Preparedness Week 2015

email newsletter is being sent to you as part of the City of Winnipeg’s

Tip #3 - Sheltering
in Place
Shelter in place is the practice of going
or remaining indoors during the release of an airborne hazardous material, as
opposed to evacuating the area.
Unless the hazardous material is
flammable, like natural gas, emergency response professionals recommend that
you initially stay indoors (shelter in place) until you receive instructions
to leave.
If the hazardous material is already
around the building you are in, evacuation may not be safe since you would
have to move through the hazardous material. Your building can help protect
you—shelter in place.
If an evacuation is ordered, move to an
area not affected by the hazardous material.
To learn what to do when asked to shelter
in place, visit EmergWeb

Tip #4 – Heat &
Sun Safety
Heat affects the body's ability to
regulate its temperature. The body tries to keep a consistent temperature
(about 37 C or 98.6 F) but prolonged exposure to heat can result in
conditions such as dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
People with chronic health conditions,
older adults, those taking certain medications or people performing strenuous
activity, homeless people, infants and young children are at increased risk
for heat illness.
Death can occur if the body's temperature
climbs too high.
Be prepared to cope with the heat and
remember to check the weather forecast before heading outdoors.
Visit EmergWeb
– Heat & Sun Safety for tips on how to stay safe during warm
temperatures.
Stay safe! Plan ahead!
Thank you,
