MARCH IS FRAUD AWARENESS MONTH
MARCH IS FRAUD AWARENESS MONTH
March is Fraud
Awareness Month, and this March celebrates the 10th Anniversary of
this designation. In conjunction with other agencies from the community,
the Winnipeg Police Service will be participating in events to help educate citizens
on how they can protect themselves from fraud.
These events include:
Public information booth – March 8th & 9th - Polo Park Mall, Centre Court
Twitter conversation - March 19th, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., #WPSFraudSquad
“Shred It” Event - March 31st, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Vital Mall parking lot outside Silver City. A maximum of two bags or boxes per person to this FREE event please.
Preventing fraud takes an awareness to recognize when an offering is false, in knowing how to protect your personal information, and in how to prevent from falling to pressure tactics from con artists. These events are designed to provide education and reduce losses to involving fraud; losses which totaled almost $100 million for Canadians in 2012.

Manitoba Deaf Association
Hosts
Presentation on Text-911
Speaker: The police officer will give a speech about
T-911.
Purpose
for Townhall Meeting: T9-1-1 (Text with 9-1-1) provides 9-1-1
call centres the ability to communicate with a Deaf, hard of hearing, or speech
impaired person during an emergency using wireless text messaging.
The
customers have to register at the wireless providers with T9-1-1 that should
only be used for emergency situations that require a response from police, fire
or emergency medical services.
When
a registered user requires 9-1-1 services, they dial 9-1-1 on their cell phone.
There is no need for them to speak, as the 9-1-1 call taker will be notified
that the caller needs to communicate via text messaging. The 9-1-1 call taker
then initiates text messaging with the caller to address emergency.
Thursday, March 27, 2013
